Recent statistics released by the Turkish Statistics Institute (TurkStat) on the number of divorces in Turkey have revealed that the rate of divorce increased by 4.5 percent in 2014 compared to 2013.
The statistics also show that the number of divorced couples stood at 130,913 in 2014, while the number of divorced couples was 125,305 in 2013.
Antalya is the city with the highest number of divorces in Turkey, TurkStat’s statistics revealed, while Hakkari is the city with the lowest.
The TurkStat data also revealed that 39.6 percent of couples divorce during the first five years of their marriage, while 21.8 percent divorce between six and 10 years.
According to media reports, the Parliament Speaker’s Office has decided to set up a commission to understand the reasons behind the divorces and to draft possible measures that can be taken to prevent couples from divorcing in Turkey, after several parliamentary political parties gave proposals separately on the issue.
